Community Partnerships
Underwood is proud and appreciative of all our community partnerships that strengthen and enhance academic instruction.

Be Active NC .. "Just Push Play" is a program brought to Underwood by "Be Active North Carolina". It is helping create an environment where physical activity is the norm throughout the day in our classrooms, in our afterschool programs and with our staff. Physical activity is a proven method to maintain a healthy weight and it improve classroom focus and reduce anxiety. The staff enjoyed a "Just Push Play" kick-off session which you can view here (click the "Play" arrow in the middle). Also watch a short video about Underwood's program here.

NC State Student Teachers .. NC State has partnered with Underwood for the past two years to provide field experience for student teachers. This opportunity allows for the student teachers to utilize and develop their knowledge through the ongoing relationships they develop with the school.  Their expertise, current knowledge and ideas allow our staff to stay abreast to current trends in the academic world of education.

YMCA .. Underwood currently has an on-site after-school program run by the YMCA.  The program starts immediately after school and closes at 6:00. click here for more information
Junior Achievement .. Community-trained volunteers are working with select first and third grade students through a hands-on program to teach them about the workforce.  These volunteers bring their own experiences to enrich the curriculum they have been trained to teach.

Meredith Reads .. Education students working to achieve their master’s in literacy work with students who are in need of more direct reading instruction.

Interact .. Youth Education Services are providing instruction to fifth grade students on domestic violence.

D.A.R.E. .. Trained police officers provide an enriched program to our fifth graders that teach students how to make good decisions in high risk situations.
